Matthew logs into a world of opportunities

Onehunga school leaver lands $20,000 Vodafone scholarship to study Information Technology at NZSE!

Matthew Siaopo has recently entered a world of exciting opportunities he scarcely knew existed until this year. The quiet 18 year old from Onehunga is the proud winner of a two-year, $20,000 Vodafone Creative Technologies Scholarship, which has allowed him to pursue a Level 6 Diploma in Information Technology at the New Zealand School of Education (NZSE). “I finished high school last year but wasn’t too sure about the tertiary options available and what was the right fit for me,” Matthew told the Western Leader. “I applied for the scholarship because technology has always interested me and I wanted to study something I was familiar with.”

Unlike his experience at school which he admits lacked focus, Matthew enjoys coming to class at NZSE’s School of Creative Technologies in Avondale. The brand new purpose built campus provides a fresh impetus to IT studies, with the use of technology to enable and support high quality learning and teaching. This “flipped classroom” environment provides a world of active learning where student engagement and student-teacher interaction increases, resulting in better graduate and career outcomes. Matthew represents the new face of Maori and Pacifica youth who are taking to IT in a big way. “The scholarship programme opens up doors to young people who would not typically pursue tertiary education or perhaps be able to afford the fees,” he points out. “My success in IT has inspired members of my whanau who now see new avenues for study and employment for themselves.”

Thanks to this scholarship, Matthew will have the opportunity to experience first-hand the workplace models of the future, with access to academic mentors, work experience placements and a high level of support throughout student journey and right into the global workforce. At the end of the study period, some recipients may be selected for internship roles, where they will rotate across Vodafone’s various technology teams at the head office in Auckland or at the new Innovation Centre in Christchurch. “I had to step outside my comfort zone but it’s worth it,” Matthew says.
