Literacy and Numeracy requirements
New Zealand School of Education recognises literacy and numeracy skills as an essential component for successful participation in its programmes. The objective of NZSE’s Literacy and Numeracy Strategy is to identify individual students’ literacy and numeracy needs and provide them with the opportunity to develop and improve them.
All students studying in this programme will be assessed at the beginning of their course in both reading and numeracy using the TEC’s National Assessment Tool. Students are required to achieve a step 4 in reading and a step 5 in numeracy. Support activities will be put in place for any students with identified areas of need and can include but are not limited to enrolment in Pathways Awarua or Vital English (a free online self-directed English course) and peer to peer mentoring. Literacy and numeracy activities will also be embedded within their programme.
Students have the option of completing the assessment online or on a paper-based version. Students may need to sit a second assessment in the last two weeks of their course depending on their initial results
Note: In absence of IELTS/TOEFL, international students may be asked to provide evidence of English being their medium of education and/or sit an English Entrance test to confirm their level of English. If their English rating is below equivalent of IELTS 5.0 in any band, they will be required to attend English classes until their IELTS overall band score reaches that level.
A student must study all 6 courses which encompass the 18 unit standards, as the basic principles of early childhood education and care apply across all types of service in different settings. In order to achieve the qualification, a student must be successful in 6 courses (63 credits).
