Celebrating Brijesh Sethi’s 5th Anniversary as Co-Chair of Quality Tertiary Institutions (QTI)

This year brings a remarkable milestone for Quality Tertiary Institutions (QTI) Ngā Wānanga Kounga as Co-Chair Brijesh Sethi celebrates five of dedicated leadership and service. Under Sethi’s guidance as Chair for three years, and Co-Chair for two years, QTI has solidified its role as a powerful advocate for Aotearoa’s private tertiary education sector.

Sethi, Founder of NZSE College, has been unwavering in his commitment to creating a fair and balanced system for learners and education providers alike. “It has been a privilege to work towards a framework that prioritises accessibility, fairness, and long-term sustainability,” says Sethi. “My focus has always been on achieving the best outcomes for learners while ensuring a level playing field for private and public providers. The support and receptiveness from colleagues at NZQA, Tertiary Education Commission, Ministry of Education, and Immigration New Zealand have made it all possible.”

QTI represents thirteen premier Private Training Establishments (PTEs) that deliver high-quality education across a wide spectrum of disciplines, from foundational courses to postgraduate studies. Collectively, these institutions educate more than 15,000 students across New Zealand, underscoring QTI’s vital role in the nation’s tertiary ecosystem. Ensuring that the private tertiary sector’s voice is heard in key discussions with government agencies has always been a cornerstone of Sethi’s leadership.

One of Sethi’s notable achievements has been fostering a stronger relationship with ITENZ, the country’s largest private tertiary membership association. “This collaboration has strengthened our sector’s ability to highlight the significant contributions private providers make to education and workforce development,” says Sethi. Other accomplishments as Chair and Co-Chair have included leading QTI during the COVID-19 pandemic – a tumultuous time for the education sector – in which Sethi collaborated with other peak bodies and government agencies for the best possible learner outcomes.

Dr. Anatole Bogatski, Executive Director of QTI, credits Sethi’s vision and principles for elevating the organisation’s impact. “Senior officials and ministers in the education sector know and respect Brijesh for his readiness to speak up and say it as it is. His insights are rooted in years of experience and success, particularly in growing one of New Zealand’s most successful PTE groups,” says Dr. Bogatski.

Former Executive Director Tommy Honey agrees that Sethi makes a great impact in the role. “He is widely respected both as a fierce advocate and as a considered contributor to sector discussions. QTI has been fortunate to have his unflagging and committed leadership,” says Honey.

As QTI continues to navigate the evolving challenges of the tertiary education sector, Sethi’s leadership remains a guiding force. His vision, values, and determination have not only fortified QTI’s position as an influential voice, but have also laid a strong foundation for future success.
