Meet NZSEG’s Group Operations Director Andrew Brennan

It was 2005 when Andrew Brennan stepped into New Zealand Skills and Education College (NZSE) as an evening IT tutor. Back then, the organisation was a single campus tucked into a modest space in West Auckland. “We had three classrooms, a lunchroom, a few offices, and seven staff members,” Andrew recalls. “But what stood out to me was a shared vision—to provide meaningful education for people who didn’t necessarily fit the traditional university or polytech pathways.”

Nineteen years later, Andrew serves as Group Operations Director for New Zealand Skills and Education Group (NZSEG), an organisation that now includes NZSE, Seafield School of English, and Edvance. His role oversees facilities, IT systems, and fleet management across six campuses, ensuring operations run smoothly for staff and learners alike. “My job is to make sure our people have the tools they need to do their jobs and deliver the best outcomes for students,” Andrew explains.

Andrew’s journey at NZSEG reflects the organisation’s remarkable transformation over two decades. From opening its doors to international students in 2006 to forging a degree pathway with AUT in 2010, and expanding with a South Auckland campus in 2012, each milestone marks a step forward in its mission to create meaningful opportunities.

“These weren’t just organisational achievements—they were about reaching more communities and opening doors for people who might not have had access to education otherwise,” Andrew explains.

One of the most transformative moments came in 2016 with the acquisition of ATC (NZSE’s military prep school) and Seafield. “That brought us into youth education and significantly expanded our portfolio,” Andrew reflects. “It was a challenge, but it reaffirmed our commitment to inclusivity and growth.”

What keeps Andrew motivated after nearly two decades? “The stories from alumni,” he says without hesitation. “Graduates tell us about being the first in their whānau to pursue higher education or how their studies have changed their lives. That’s the kind of impact that stays with you.”

For Andrew, NZSEG’s inclusivity is a cornerstone of its success. “We’re a diverse organisation—our staff and students come from all over the world. We don’t just accept that; we celebrate it,” he says. “Whether it’s through cultural events or simply learning from each other, this diversity makes us stronger.”

Looking ahead, Andrew is excited about the NZSEG’s future. “We’re constantly adapting—whether it’s adopting new technology, expanding programmes like our Bachelor of Business and Information Management, or entering work-based learning. The goal is always the same: to provide opportunities for our learners to succeed.”

As NZSEG celebrates 20 years, Andrew reflects on its enduring values. “The desire to make education accessible and impactful hasn’t changed since day one,” he says. “This is a place where people—staff and students alike—can grow, thrive, and achieve more. I’ve been here 19 years, and I still think it’s one of the best decisions I’ve ever made.”
