This programme provides learners with the essential skills and knowledge to manage security risk situations confidently and effectively. Whether you’re aspiring to become a security officer, guard, or crowd controller, our comprehensive L3 Certificate in Security will equip you with the tools to succeed in entry-level roles.

This programme is tailored for domestic students eager to start a career in the growing security industry. You will gain knowledge and skills to effectively protect venues, property, people—and most importantly, yourself.

Pathway to Work learners complete the first module with NZSE (within a 12-week period), before continuing into employment to complete the remaining three modules.

This programme supports a transition from provider based to work-based learning. It consists of a three-step process:

  • Learner commences study in the provider-based setting,
  • Learner obtains a COA (Certificate of Approval), if not already acquired
  • Learner continues study in the work-based learning setting

Programme overview

Graduates of this programme will be capable of carrying out a broad range of tasks under limited supervision including the ability to:

  • Communicate effectively with security management, colleagues, clients, and the public while carrying out security work.
  • Conduct self professionally and ethically as a security guard in a workplace, demonstrating integrity and respect for all individuals.
  • Apply knowledge of New Zealand legislation relevant to the security industry to promote a safe and secure environment, mitigate security risks, and respond to security breaches.
  • Operate security equipment and technology while carrying out security work.
  • Apply knowledge of confidentiality, privacy, and specific client requirements to protect clients in a security context.
  • Apply knowledge of personal safety, situational awareness, and risk assessment as it relates to workplace health and safety in a security context.
  • Respond to incidents, events, and emergency situations, and interact with other emergency services in a security work context.
  • COA (Certificate of Approval) Cost: $250 – which is required for working in the security industry – however you may qualify for WINZ funding to cover this cost (enquire with our course adviser)
  • Programme cost: $499 – however you may qualify for an NZSE Scholarship to cover this cost (enquire with our course adviser)
  • Programme includes an introduction to possible employment upon completion of Module 1 and a temporary COA.
