NZSE hosts inaugural PTERNZ symposium, marking a milestone for private tertiary research

NZSE College was honoured to recently host the very first Private Tertiary Education and Research New Zealand (PTERNZ) Symposium.

Bringing together six private tertiary providers, the symposium delivered a rich day of research discussion and presentations. We were thrilled to see a wide range of contributions — from Master’s students to experienced, research-active academics — all focused on advancing practice across their fields.

Group Academic Director of Research and Operations Dr Neel Pandey says this inaugural initiative reflects NZSEG’s vision to be at the forefront of research. “Supporting and elevating our research-active staff is a core part of who we are, and this symposium was a tangible step in that direction,” says Pandey.

Attendees thoroughly enjoyed listening to the range of cutting-edge presentations, which spanned across artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, robots, education, conservation, and renewable energy, showcasing the breadth of expertise across the PTERNZ network.

This symposium marks just the first step in a shared long-term vision, says Pandey. “Our goal is to grow this into a fully-fledged conference that provides a strong platform for both staff and postgraduate students to present their work, gain experience, and build networks.”

NZSE extends a special thanks to Media Design School Senior Lecturer Mike Watts for his role in bringing this partnership together, and to our own staff, Giang Mai and Haipeng Li, for their fascinating presentations on emotion tracking in video content and enhanced emphysema classification in CT images. We’re excited to watch this inaugural gathering evolve into a flagship conference for New Zealand’s private tertiary research community.
