NZSE launches graduate diplomas to address teacher shortage in New Zealand

Education Diploma
NZSE is pleased to announce that we have received NZQA approval for the Graduate Diploma in Teaching (Primary) (Level 7) and Graduate Diploma in Teaching (Secondary) (Level 7).

These new qualifications have been developed to help address Aotearoa’s critical shortage of qualified teachers, while preparing graduates with the practical skills and confidence needed to thrive in today’s classrooms. Delivered through a work-integrated learning model, both programmes combine academic study with extensive in-school placement experience, ensuring learners graduate classroom-ready from day one.

Head of Education Dr Stephen Kendall-Jones says his career as a principal shaped the development of the programmes and NZSE’s strong focus on practical work placements.

“My own experience in schools was that people graduating from universities often weren’t fully equipped for the realities of the classroom. During the process of developing these qualifications, the NZSE team spoke directly with schools and teachers, and they told us exactly the same thing — especially as student needs become increasingly complex.

“The difference with NZSE’s programmes is that it isn’t all theory. Learners are spending multiple days a week in the classroom, getting to know the students and becoming part of the school whānau.”

Over the course of the one-year programmes, learners will develop the skills to create inclusive learning environments for neurodiverse students, embed bicultural practice into their teaching, and build strong relationships with whānau, colleagues, and the wider community — all grounded in Te Mātaiaho / The New Zealand Curriculum.

The Graduate Diploma in Teaching (Primary) (Level 7) is designed for degree holders looking to transition into a rewarding career as a primary school teacher. The Graduate Diploma in Teaching (Secondary) (Level 7) is aimed at graduates with a background in STEM subjects who are interested in teaching within their area of expertise.

Both programmes include carefully matched school placements, with learners spending two to three days each week in the classroom alongside dedicated professional practice blocks of three to four weeks throughout the year. This extensive hands-on experience ensures learners leave NZSE with the capability required to become registered teachers upon graduation.
