This qualification is designed as an entry point into IT, setting graduates up either for further study or for entry-level work in the field. It builds the core skills needed to progress into further IT study, take on entry-level IT support roles under broad guidance, and communicate professionally with stakeholders.

Organisations and communities will benefit from having IT graduates who have gained industry relevant transferable skills and knowledge across a range of disciplines within IT, enabling them to contribute to society, supporting digital proficiency and capability in a range of community and voluntary areas.

CITE401 – IT Concepts and Infras

This course provides students with the fundamental knowledge of computer devices, hardware, network, operating systems, storage and security. Students will gain hands on skill in knowledge of configuring operating system, common application software and devices while meeting ethical, legal and organisational requirements.

CITE402 – Web Development Fundamentals

This course provides students with the knowledge of fundamental concepts of business analysis to gather requirements from stakeholders while collaborating and communicating professionally to create prototypes and gather feedback. Students will create interactive digital media by applying concepts of user experience and interface design to meet requirements.

CITE403 – Database Fundamentals

This course provides students with the knowledge of fundamental concepts of relational database design and development. Students will be introduced to project management methodologies, project planning and management tools, professional and ethical practices to the storage and retrieval of data to meet organisational needs.

CITE404 – Software Development Fundamentals

This course introduces students to the concepts of application and software and provides the fundamental knowledge of software development tools and techniques. Students will learn to design programs, write simple algorithms, implement the design specifications and test the code for correctness.

The programme is designed to:
▪ Develop knowledge and skills in the area of IT support for study, business and community purposes.
▪ Develop skills in the areas of communication, professional and ethical practice, problem solving and decision making in information technology context.
▪ Develop introductory knowledge and skills in the concepts of software, database and information systems.
▪ Provide a pathway to further study or work in information technology, business, or other industries.

Where to from here?

This qualification will build on the learner’s existing IT skills from previous qualifications, or relevant experience, or may provide a starting point for study in the IT professional suite of New Zealand qualifications for those that have limited exposure to IT related study. 

Graduates will be capable of applying relevant transferable skills and knowledge across a range of disciplines within IT. They will also be able to communicate with stakeholders in a professional manner, and work both as part of a team and independently under broad guidance.
