Daumavia Herewini always knew she’d reach her goals despite an incredibly challenging upbringing. Now with the unwavering support of New Zealand Skills and Education College she is doing just that, sharing her knowledge with our Hamilton rangatahi as a Security tutor.
Only a couple of years ago Daumavia was a student herself at our ATC Military Prep school. Moving to Hamilton at only 17 years old, it was at NZSE College Daumavia found the manaakitanga and care she needed to stay on the right path. She started studying Level 1, Fitness and Recreation and loved it, continuing on to complete level 2, VPM and level 3 Security.
“I loved the military life and all the marching as well as all the leadership roles. It helped me feel worthy and important and that I have a purpose,” recalls Daumavia.
After graduating and working in the Security Industry for the last two years, Daumavia started her new role as the Security Level 3 Tutor at ATC Military Prep’s Hamilton Campus. NZSE College is supporting her with further training to obtain her teaching certificate.
Returning as a tutor is a huge accomplishment for graduate Daumavia, who clearly remembers the hard times as a teenager when she was homeless without any family support while trying to look after her younger siblings.
“As a tutor I feel like I am in a great position to help these students. They are probably working through what I went through,” she says. “I’ll help them believe that they will get there and there are better days ahead.”
NZSE College Founder and Chair Brijesh Sethi knows Daumavia will be an inspiration to the students. “We are extremely proud of the resilience and determination Daumavia has demonstrated to chart her own course in life. She has broken the cycle to be a role model for other students and within her own family,” says Mr Sethi.
