Andrew Ahumuza
Device Repair Technician, Auckland
One of Andrew Ahumuza’s favourite things about studying at NZSE College was the opportunity to ask questions.
Coming from Uganda, he says the level of one-on-one support from tutors was something he had never experienced before.
“So I made the most of the opportunity, and I asked as many questions as I could — everything from basic concepts through to employment advice. Questions like, ‘What is it like working in IT?’ and ‘How do I build a good CV? My tutors took the time to answer everything I asked.”
Ahumuza studied the NZ Diploma in IT Technical Support (Level 5).
From 2025 to 2026, Ahumuza built a strong foundation in information technology with a focus on technical support, networking, and real-world IT applications.
For Ahumuza, the highlight of the programme was the hands-on learning experience.
“I loved installing operating systems, troubleshooting networks, building projects, and solving real IT problems. The practical learning made the theory much easier to understand.”
When deciding where to study, Ahumuza chose NZSE because of its strong reputation for helping students transition into internships and employment after graduation.
“I heard NZSE really supports students with finding work opportunities after study, and that was very important to me.”
That reputation quickly proved true. After just one week of job searching, Ahumuza secured a role as a Device Repair Technician at an electronics store.
“It’s a great position where I do troubleshooting, device setup, software installations, and customer support. NZSE prepared me well through the practical learning sessions, but they also taught me how to communicate with users who don’t know what to do. You have to be calm and patient, and NZSE really helped me develop those skills.”
Life in Aotearoa New Zealand
Originally from Uganda, Ahumuza decided to move to New Zealand after hearing positive things from his mother.
“My mum told me, ‘You won’t meet a mean person in New Zealand’ — and honestly, I haven’t so far!” he laughs. “New Zealand has great opportunities, the people are friendly, the education is great value, and it’s a very safe country.”
Three reasons why Ahumuza recommends a career in technology:
1. There is high demand
“Technology jobs are growing and needed everywhere in the world.”
2. There is strong career growth
“You can start in entry-level roles like IT support and progress into areas like software engineering, data analytics, or cloud computing.”
3. It is practical and rewarding
“You get to solve problems and help people every day.”
